Body Mass Index:

To be considered for this surgery, a person must meet one of the following requirements:

  • The person must have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more.
  • The person must have a life-threatening or disabling condition caused by or made worse by his or her weight and have a BMI of 35 or more.
  • This surgery is usually done for people who are very obese (over 330 lb (149.7 kg)).

    The person must also meet all of the following requirements:
  • The person must have been obese for at least 5 years.
  • The person must not have a history of alcohol abuse.
  • The person must not have depression or another major psychiatric disorder.
  • The person must be between 18 and 65 years of age.

    All surgeries have risk, and surgeries to treat obesity often have limited success. Therefore, it is important for you and your doctor to discuss your treatment options to decide what is best for your situation
